Est. Mumbai — Practising Since 2010
Award Winning Multidisciplinary Design Studio
We shape space, light and material into buildings that belong to their place — quietly ambitious, built to last generations.
We believe architecture is a slow conversation between site, structure and the people who will live inside it.
Courtyard Study, Alibaug — 2023
Bombay Building Workshop is an award-winning multidisciplinary design studio working across architecture, urban design, and interiors. Founded in Mumbai, the practice has grown into a collective of architects, urbanists and craftspeople united by a single obsession: honest, climate-responsive design rooted in Indian material culture.
Every commission — a private residence, a civic waterfront, a single room — is treated as a piece of research. We study light before we draw a wall. We choose stone before we choose style.
Led by two practitioners, one philosophy.
Rohaan
Co-Founder & Principal Architect
Rohaan trained as an architect with a decade in structural detailing before co-founding the studio in 2010. His work is defined by an obsession with load, material honesty and the way a building ages. He leads the practice's architecture and urban design verticals.
"A building should look like it grew out of an argument with its site — and won."
- RIBA International Fellowship, 2022
- INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS — Design Excellence, 2019
- Forbes India — 40 Under 40 in Design, 2017
Manali
Co-Founder & Design Director
Manali leads interiors and design direction across the studio, with a background spanning furniture design and spatial storytelling. She believes the emotional register of a space — its light, texture and silence — matters as much as its plan.
"Interiors are the last four feet — where architecture finally touches the hand."
- Elle Decor International Design Award, 2023
- AD100 India, 2021 & 2024
- Inside Design Editor's Choice, 2020
Featured Projects
Buildings that argue with gravity, quietly.
From single-family houses to civic institutions, our architecture is structured around climate, craft and the long view.
Cities are read at the scale of a footstep.
We design the public realm — waterfronts, precincts and civic ground — as carefully as we design a single room.
The last four feet, considered.
Interiors led by material research — stone, brass, cane and plaster, sourced within a day's drive of every site.
How a building is made.
Research
Site, climate, culture and constraint are studied before a single line is drawn — soil reports sit beside oral histories.
Concept
A single guiding idea is tested through sketches, physical models and light studies until it survives scrutiny.
Design Development
Materials, structure and systems are resolved in parallel with craftspeople, not handed to them after the fact.
Documentation
Every joint and junction is drawn to the centimetre — nothing is left to be improvised on site.
Execution
Principals visit site weekly through construction. The drawing is a promise; the building is where we keep it.
